To be honest.. it's been a tough year. They say bad things come in 3's but most recently I found that they can also come in 7's and 8's. One can choose any number of options with which to cope with such streaks of bad luck. I found that hanging out with friends and having a sense of humor about it all works just fine.
To contrast the adversities in my life I have been so lucky to have great friends and one in particular; "the double b" happens to have a sail boat stationed in a slip at treasure island. We went out quite often this sumer for some really good escapism.
Sailing in the bay is an incredible experience. Having lived in San Francisco most of my life I guess I've just always been a land dweller and never had the opportunity or the time to check out all the sites from the bay itself. It felt a lot like everything was just slowing down and all the hustle and bustle of the city just seemed so unimportant...yet this is all within the great contrast of being able to look upon the city from the water and sort-of thumb a mental middle finger at it all.
One of these great times was fireworks night @ the Giants ballpark (whatever the h*** corporate BS name you wanna call it). It was one of those magic San Francisco nights when there is no wind... perfect, and the sunsets were just starting to turn a pinkish orange. All traffic seemed to open up for me. The Bay Bridge was practically empty and Dave Brubecks "Take Five" was on the radio so I cranked it as I seemed to glide over the bridge with both windows open. I met my trusty friend "the double b" and we were off. The only thing not in our favor that night was that there was NO wind. We did manage to drift over to the ballpark just in time to sit right underneath the firework show to the tunes of the great Benny Goodman.
